Egon Van Herreweghe (°1985, Ghent, BE) received his master's degree in Visual Arts in Photography from the KASK in Ghent in 2008. In 2008 to 2009 he followed a one-year research master in Art & Design at Sint Lucas in Antwerp. After this, he obtained a postgraduate degree at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Ghent.
Van Herreweghe produces and manipulates photographs, sculptures and installations to explore his ongoing interest in the world of images. His practice is characterized by fragmented, collage-based arrangements in which he combines existing elements with works he creates in his studio. Focusing on our collective relationship with design, fashion and advertising, Van Herreweghe shows how we constantly reach for media to discover and define our motives and identities. By delving into the circulation of images as a sphere of exchange and value assignment, and as a place where desire is formed, he reminds us that making is a form of rereading. Reading the endless recycling of signs and images requires developing visual literacy in the broadest sense. He explores these images by repeatedly manipulating them with reproduction techniques such as copying, scanning and printing. In his work, he treats the image as a body and the bearer of that image as a skin. This symbiosis between image and surface is the main subject of the works Van Herreweghe presents.
